Step 2: open the item
The jobs PonyBuy does on your behalf
A shopping agent is a stand-in buyer with a warehouse. Stripped of the marketing, PonyBuy solves three specific problems and leaves the rest to you.

The company
Who runs it and since when
PonyBuy operates at ponybuy.com and its site footer carries a copyright range starting in 2020, which is the earliest date the company itself publishes. Its About page describes the service as covering purchasing, quality checks, storage, customs clearance and shipping.
The same page carries a customer and country count. We have deliberately left it out of this guide: it is the company describing itself, there is no independent source, and a guide site has no way to audit it. Scale tells you nothing useful about whether your own parcel arrives.
What can be checked is narrower and more useful: the platforms it supports, the steps it publishes, the fee formula it prints, and the storage and insurance terms it commits to in its help centre. Those are what this site is built on.

The three problems it exists to solve
- 01
Chinese sellers will not take your payment method
Taobao and 1688 checkouts expect a Chinese payment account. PonyBuy pays the seller in yuan on your behalf, and you pay PonyBuy with a credit card, WeChat, Alipay or a topped up balance.
- 02
Chinese sellers will not ship to your country
Most listings offer domestic delivery only. PonyBuy gives the seller a Chinese warehouse address, then handles the export leg as a separate transaction that you approve later.
- 03
You cannot inspect what you cannot see
Between those two legs sits the part that makes agents worth using: the item is unpacked, checked and photographed in the warehouse while you still have the option to not ship it.
What PonyBuy handles and what stays with you
Most disappointment with agents comes from expecting them to do something in the right hand column.
| Step | PonyBuy does | You do |
|---|---|---|
| Finding the item | Pulls in listing details once you give a link | Choose the category, the seller and the exact listing |
| Judging the seller | Nothing. It is not a marketplace and does not rank sellers | Read the photos, measurements and answered questions |
| Paying the seller | Pays in yuan, including domestic delivery | Pay PonyBuy |
| Checking the goods | Inspects for defects and photographs the item | Decide whether the photos are good enough to ship |
| Storing | Free for 90 days from the stored status | Submit a delivery order in time |
| Shipping | Repacks, declares and hands to the carrier | Pick the line and pay the shipping deposit |
| Import duty and VAT | Nothing. It is not the importer | Pay whatever your own customs authority bills |
| Returns to the seller | Handles cases under its after sales rules | Raise it while the item is still in China |
Which marketplaces it reaches
The Beginner's Guide names Taobao, Tmall and 1688 as the platforms whose listings are read automatically, and the site describes itself more broadly as an agent for Chinese platforms including Weidian.
The practical difference matters more than the list. Taobao and Tmall are consumer marketplaces with single item pricing. 1688 is a wholesale platform where prices drop at quantity and sellers expect volume, which is why PonyBuy applies a different quality control standard to 1688 goods.
If a product link points at 1688, read it as a wholesale listing: check the minimum order, and expect the packaging and finish to be plainer than a consumer listing.
When another route suits you better
A guide that only lists reasons to use its own partner is an advert. Here is the other side, and it is not short.
If you need the item by a date, do not use an agent. Two shipping legs and a customs check are not compatible with a deadline, and no line offers a guarantee you could rely on. If the item is available from a European or American seller at a difference of twenty or thirty currency units, buy it locally: the returns right alone is worth more than that. If you are ordering a single light item, the first weight charge and the handling fee will dominate the cost, and the trip stops being economic.
Among agents, the choice matters less than the internet suggests. They all run the same warehouse and consolidation model. Compare on the routes they actually serve to your country, on whether their storage window fits how you shop, and on whether their insurance covers the failure you personally worry about. If another agent serves your country with a line PonyBuy does not carry, that is a better reason to switch than any fee comparison.
- Need it by a date: buy locally instead.
- One small item, no plans to buy more: the fixed parcel costs will dominate.
- Available internationally at a small premium: take the returns rights.
- Your country is not served well by the available lines: check the estimator first.
How to judge an agent you have not used yet
Almost everything an agent promises is a deadline in disguise, so read the clocks first. How long will it hold your goods before the warehouse decides you have abandoned them. How long after delivery can you still raise a problem. How long does it take to answer. An agent that writes its clocks down is one you can plan around; an agent that does not is one you will be arguing with at the worst possible moment.
PonyBuy puts the first of those in writing. The clock is ninety days and it starts the moment your order flips to the stored state, which is a status you can watch in your own account rather than a date somebody emails you. Run it out without submitting a parcel and without replying, and the page says the goods are treated as abandoned and destroyed.
That number is not generous or stingy on its own. What makes it usable is that it exists, it starts at a status you can see in your own account, and it is written on a page you can point at later. Apply the same three tests to any agent before you send it money.

Other agents, and what actually differs between them
You will meet a dozen other names in the same threads. Before comparing them on anything, it helps to know how little of the wording is theirs. The page in the figure sets out what the service costs. We have read the same sentences, in the same order, on another agent's help centre under a different brand name. These are not rival philosophies of pricing; they are the same boilerplate with different numbers dropped into it.
Which is the useful instruction. Do not compare the prose, compare the figures that got filled in: what the service fee is, what rate your money is converted at, which routes the estimator actually offers for your country, how long the storage clock runs, and what the inspection page says it will not look at. All five are readable before you create an account.
Nobody can hand you a ranking of agents that means anything, because the things that would decide it are not measured anywhere in public. What you can do is read five pages on each one and notice which numbers are missing.
